Fazıl Say

Concerts with Fazıl Say are more direct, more open, more exciting; in short, they go straight to the heart. "A spectator: 'I think we reached the climax of this Festival. Enescu is an opportunity of reinventing Romania by what this country has best'
Published September 19, 2013 08:25

Many members of the public had the amability to share some impressions about the concert held Wednesday night at the Athenaeum by Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, with the american James Gaffigan as a conductor. The concert had three parts, the last two being followed by applauses that didn't seem to stop and encores enjoyed by the public.

G. Enescu – the Symphonic Poem 'Isis' (orchestration by Pascal Bentoiu – after the composer's sketches) with the participation of The Chamber Choir 'Prelude' of The National Art Center 'Romanian Youth'; conductor – Voicu Enăchescu
W. A. Mozart – Concert no. 21 for piano and orchestra in C Major K. 467
J. Haydn – symphony no. 104 in D Major H1/104 'London'

'Fazil Say seems to be Mozart's reincarnation!'

'I think we reached the climax of this Festival. (…) as the Italians used to say, Enescu is an opportunity of reinventing Romania with the best of this country and with what this country has to offer to the rest of Europe and the entire world. And that would be inspired spirituality'

'Fazil Say seems to be Mozart's reincarnation. This was not seen ever before' (Radu Negoescu – 'just a music lover')

'Once again I can't help to see what an amaizing public we have.'

'I came to an already known soloist. (…) He didn't disappoint me, of course. And Lucerne Symphony Orchestra prooved their value in the second part of this concert with the beautiful and well known Symphony of Haydn. Thank you for 'George Enescu' Festival' (Adriana Popescu)

'Here came only great artists from Romania or abroad'

'Very beautiful. The pianist impressed me by his imagination and by the songs I never heard before, some of them.' (a writer)

'This year I had the joyful opportunity of listening to an orchestra from Osaka. Tonight's pianist was a genuine Turkish (smiles). Original, of great talent!' (Prof. Alexandru Pleșca, musician)

Denica Kucera, violonist: „Fazil Say is nuts! He’s charming. We all love him.”
Published September 19, 2013 13:09

Fazil Say moment (Wednesday afternoon, the 16th of September, at The Romanian Atheneum) was very special not only for the audience, but also for the members of the orchestra. Although the majority of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra’s members perform together with this pianist for almost two years, they are still under his spell and they confess „they all love him”.

Two members of the orchestra, Denica Kucera, first violin (in the right side of the photo) and Antje-Davis Hinke, second violin, shared with us some impressions at the end of the concert:

„The public was great, was very, very enthusiastic. It was really a pleasure. And it is a lovely hall!”, said Denica. “I am Bulgarian so I am sort of your cousin, your neighbour. I like very much your city, it's beautiful, with lovely people and great food!”, she added.

Denica Kucera has only compliments for Fazil Say and she shows her admiration: “Oh, he is crazy. He is lovely. We all love him. He is always original and there are never dull moments.”

Antje-Davis Hinke, the Bulgarian violinist’s colleague, adds: “Beautiful buildings, nice audience. The pianist… we know him for quite a while, two years. We all love him!”

Mozart. The Magician.
Published September 20, 2013 07:44

Fazil Say’s concert is an invitation to feel music with your whole body. He tests your senses till you totally abandon yourself to him, holding you in the palm of his hand, together with the orchestra.

Every single note of piano is followed by his hand’s gesture: brief, cutting a playful sound, drawing a semicircle as if, all of a sudden, an invisible story begins. You know he has, in the middle of his palm, some threads and you are only a doll moving at your puppeteer’s will.

The pianist and composer Fazil Say performed Wendsday afternoon at The Romanian Atheneum together with Lucerne Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Gaffigan. Mozart. The 21st Concert for piano and orchestra, in C major. The soloist dominated the orchestra, slipping a provocative cabotine pleasure in his interpretation, his only and the most authentique freedom.

The morning before the concert, Fazil Say had warm brightness on his face, innocence combined with assumption: light blue shirt, relaxed, he bended over the piano for a passional excerpt (he is wellknown for jazzy interpretation).

„It’s like you’d be naked. While I’m performing, my soul is naked in front of the public, and that’s risky: if you won’t do it well, the audience may consider you have a bad soul. And you don’t want this to happen.”

The second encore at the Atheneum and the audience is still ovationing. „He’s Mozart reincarnation. As crazy as him!”, I hear the madam sitting behind me whispering for herself.
